2023 Championship Finals Day Report

On Saturday 9th September 2023 the club hosted its annual finals day when all five finals were contested in sweltering, hot and humid conditions.

In the pinnacle event of the day, the men’s championship final, Jack Bush took his tally to seven men’s championship titles in the past twelve years with a fine 10&8 victory over Owen Lloyd. Leading by 7 holes after the first 18 holes played Jack would extend his lead to 9 up with 9 holes to play before eventually closing the match out on the 28th hole. The comprehensive defeat tough on Owen playing in his first ever men’s championship final, especially when a couple of holed putts might have seen a much closer contest unfold, the experience however something that will undoubtedly hold him in good stead for future challenges. As for Jack, his dominance as our number one golfer yet further cemented as he continues to chase down the current record of men’s championship wins held by Mike Gwyther. Well done to both Jack and Owen for reaching the men’s championship final, and our congratulations to Jack on yet another win.

A special mention to Roger Griffiths for very kindly refereeing our men’s championship final this year.

Earlier in the morning finals day had started with Ceirion Jones and Simon Morgan contesting the Wayne Jones Cup final, the change to our normal playing schedule due to Ceirion being involved in two finals, the Wayne Jones Cup final (am) and the Bryn Evans Cup final (pm). This match would be very evenly contested over the opening nine holes as the advantage switched between both players, Ceirion eventually taking a two hole lead with just three holes to play before closing the match out on the 17th green by a winning margin of 3&1. Well done both players and our congratulations to Ceirion on a fine win.

The third final to tee off on finals day was the men’s matchplay cup final contested between Peter L Davies and Wayne Evans. Peter would get off to an excellent start as he built up a four hole lead with just four holes left to play. Wayne putting up a great fightback to continue the match claiming holes 15 and 16 before a halved result on hole 17 would eventually see Peter claim a fine 2&1 win. Well done both players and our congratulations to Peter.

The men’s senior matchplay cup final which teed off at 10.30am would be contested between Robin Davies and Jeff Evans. This final proved to be another close encounter before Jeff emerged victorious on the closing holes. Well done both and our congratulations to Jeff.

The final match to get underway on finals day would be the Bryn Evans Cup final between the pairings of Robert Bush and Lee James versus Ceirion Jones and Huw Lewis. Robert and Lee would seize control of the match around the turn before building up a commanding three hole lead after twelve holes played. Wins for Ceirion and Huw on holes 13 and 14 would see the their opponents lead reduced to just one hole with five holes remaining before Robert and Lee would close the match out on the 17th green with a fine 2&1 win. Well done all, and congratulations to Robert and Lee.

Congratulations to Paul Deasy and Steven Jones on being crowned our 2023 Tate Cup Champions following a fine 2&1 victory over Paul Hussey and Chris Sweet. The final, contested on 17 September in awful wet and windy conditions, would see Paul and Steven build up a comfortable lead during the opening nine holes before being pushed all the way by Paul and Chris over the closing holes, Paul and Steven eventually claiming the title on the 17th green. Congratulations to Paul and Steven on a great effort this year, and our commiserations to our losing finalist’s Paul and Chris, well done all.

The club would like to thank all members and their guests who made the effort to come and support this year’s finals day, and of course support each of our finalists. Thank you all.
